Remind yourself and your team about why you are with the company. Companies go through changes and hire bright talent to maintain and carry out the purpose of the organization. The purpose of the organization is bigger than any individual in the organization. Sometimes difficult decisions must be made to maintain it. Remembering the great why, in the challenges of the organization puts in perspective.
Consider this quote from Peter Drucker, management consultant, "The purpose of business is the provision of goods and services to customers, instead of providing jobs for workers and executives, or dividends to shareholders."
During the 60's, while my father was in college, he was a student leader of the student movement for civil rights in Atlanta, GA. I once asked my dad why he decided to get involved in the civil rights movement. After all, he was a college student. I asked, "Why put yourself in danger? He replied:" I did it so my kids do not have to go through the same living conditions. "
Clearly, 60 were game-changing times, but do not have what one might think a game-changing purpose. He had a larger, the unselfish purpose. It was a vision, inner purpose. I once thought that Gamechangers were all they do for themselves. I discovered that their largest.
It was not him. It could easily have been just his talent. Dad was an amazing singer and an inspiration to students of the time, which is probably why he was elected as leader of the student movement.
He used the talents of something bigger than himself. Have contributed to a greater purpose. He was an important reason. When you discover why his large, its purpose becomes biggest challenges.
I recently read a story about JVC and the creation of the VHS video recorder. For those of you who do not remember, was the VCR video recorder. The videotape was before the DVD. For Gen Y readers, the DVD is the album that came out just before Blue Ray. You know, is the choice of another disk in the Redbox.
The original VTR model that was released was huge and expensive (over $ 2,500 U.S.) is definitely not an affordable model for the typical family. After this, Sony released the smaller, cheaper model, Betamax player. The challenge is not only managed an hour of tape.
JVC's team realized they had to stop thinking like engineers and what was technically possible to think like a consumer and what the people wanted.
They had to refocus on the needs of those who were trying to serve, I needed a smaller, cheaper player with a tape that was for 2 hours. His dream was that every house has a VCR and make life more enjoyable.
How JVC, a minor industry in turn, assume the task of making that happen? We created a matrix of conditions to be met before the first VHS VCR occur. These conditions include requirements that became easier to use and connect to it at home and should be easy to manufacture. JVC was a smaller set and needed major manufacturers to participate to manage demand. Wow, that's easy for consumers to obtain and use, and make it easy for others to play.
All this was for the purpose of having a VCR in every home and make life more enjoyable. Major aims to stay focused on the bigger picture. For more performance from your computer, I remind you again why the company is in existence. Remember, the gain was not the original intent. It is a goal no doubt, but not the purpose.
According to Harvard Business Review, who works for an organization that has significant work was the top motivation for employees. Remind your team about why they are there and the difference they make.
